Ajinomoto and Toray to use lysine for nylon production

Ajinomoto Co. Inc. and Toray Industries Inc. agreed to conduct joint research for manufacturing the nylon raw material 1,5-pentanediamine (1,5-PD) from lysine. Ajinomoto's current lysine capacity amounts to almost 297,000 tonnes per year at facilities in Brazil, China, France, Italy, Thailand and the United States.

The company said they had already carried out successful test production of 1,5-PD using Ajinomoto's feed-grade lysine, as well as test production of bio-based nylon made by polymerising 1,5-PD.
