Local press reports said the government plans to release BRL270 mln ($1=BRL2.05) to finance the cultivation of 100,000 ha of sweet sorghum. This could yield up to 300 mln litres of fuel ethanol in the next harvest. Sweet sorghum can be harvested during the inter-crop season. Sweet sorghum plantings rose to 20,000 ha in the current crop cycle from 3,000 in 2010/11. The government sees the potential at up to 120,000 ha, around 10% of the cane plantations due for renewal next season.
