SMP surge makes it EU's second most valuable dairy export

The EU-27 shipped more skimmed milk powder (SMP) than whole milk powder (WMP) during the first six months of 2012, confirming a now established trend.

Any comparison between the two would show prices for WMP just ahead - at an average €3 228/tonne, to €2 446/t for SMP. But SMP volumes have shot up - by 20% compared to the same period a year ago - while WMP has declined (-3.6%).
